3 Ways to Lighten Up Your Fall Festival Food

Summer season may be just behind us, but Fall festivals are right in front of and all around us! Street festivals loaded with music, games and of course, FOOD! Here are three smart and easy ways you can cut down on your calories without missing out on all the delicious fall fare options and fun!


Slimmed-Down Salads: Want to change up your next macaroni, potato or side salad?  Use Olive Oil! This quick but amazingly healthy substitute for mayo will you give you less saturated fat, but you’ll get all of the delicious goodness and health benefits of olive oil! Avocado oil is another great substitute.


Make Your Own Dressing:  Making food and condiments such at salad dressings from scratch, is essential to having healthy fall dishes. While there are many healthier storebought options nowadays, shelf options tend to be loaded with fat and salt. By making homemade salad dressings you can easily play with the proportions of ingredients to yield unique, low-fat options. If a simple balsamic vinaigrette is your goal, you can adjust the oil-to-vinegar ratio to lean to the latter. By cutting down to 2:1 ratio you will end up with 1/3 less fat per serving, while maintaining all of the great taste you and your family are familiar with.  You can also change the flavor by experimenting with different types of oil and vinegar.


I Scream, You Scream...we all scream for...Sorbet?!

After a big meal, sorbet is still an ultimate, early fall dessert. And while it’s totally fine to put out a container with some cups, cones and/or toppings, you can also substitute with coconut whip! Cocowhip is a great, dairy free topping for cake, pies and even for sorbet! You can also eat it alone, right out of the container or add as a light, sweet topping for other desserts.
