Chili-cheese-agna and “Sun”Seltzer for Lunch!

When I was a school-aged child, I helped my mother make our school lunches. Remember doing that? Me neither.

Perhaps I just put the foil-wrapped sandwich in the bag and wrote my name on it!

My mom suggested that the best way to help her prepare food/lunches, was to stay OUT of the kitchen! She truly was the best mother who wanted to do so much for her family.

I know that children today are often more involved in their food choices and meal planning. With the advent of kids’ cooking shows on television, many children want to explore cooking and meal planning at a younger age. With supervision, I think it is great for children to help with their own lunch preparations. Especially during such an uncertain time, it is important for children to feel independent and in control of themselves. Cooking can help with these goals.

Kraft Heinz is now helping empower children of all ages to help make their own lunches. Along with Walmart, Kraft Heinz is offering limitless food/lunch options for even the pickiest eaters.

Why lunch?

During the school day, lunch is usually the main meal. It’s the one meal children will eat together with their schoolmates or families, if they choose to homeschool and/or work remotely.

Food should be fun, filling and delicious. Even if lunch schedules may look different this coming school year, having your child be involved in the process can likely help them remain calmer and happier.

Grilled cheese sandwiches with fruit and tea are a favorite in our home. It is fairly simple to make, especially using the classic Kraft Singles American Cheese Slices. However, we wanted to try something different, looking ahead to this challenging new school year.

Seeking a meal that has more fiber, diversity and different colors to keep interest, we developed chili-cheese-agna with  “Sun”Seltzer.

We used staple ingredients many families already have in their homes to create something more than chili, but not as heavy as traditional lasagna. All you have to do is cook  rice and then layer it in a glass baking pan. Add the homemade chili mixture atop the rice and finally layer generously with Kraft Singles American Cheese.

For a refreshing drink, we opened 10, 10-oz.Capri Sun pouches into a larger pitcher with a spout. Easily found at your local Walmart, Capri Sun has no more added sugar than pop, and you can add seltzer for a different taste.

This gives a picnic feel for the remote or home-schooled days, which will keep the summer feeling around longer. It won't take away from the fall school day learning, it will enhance it. As we can probably all agree, anything to enhance our challenging days ahead is a good thing!
