National Library Week is April 23rd to 29th this year and we thought we'd take the opportunity to highlight some of the more unique items the Bergen and Rockland Library Systems have available to check out ... in addition to books!
1) Seeds for planting! (Sloatsburg Library- Rockland County, NY)
I was completely surprised but equally happy, to see that I could "take out" vegetable and flowering seed packets for planting in my garden! Who would have thought to "see"d that in a library? The packets are free, they come with planting/growing instructions and they have everything from Eggplant to Sunflower to Dill! Show your Rockland County library Card to "borrow."
2) Unique craft projects/maker kits
The Wyckoff, Ramsey and Mahwah Libraries in Bergen County, have some of the most unique and elaborate FREE crafts for pick up. They have crafts for both children AND adults! Everything from a hanging planter for adults to a Slide system craft for kids. Our son made a slide delivery system out of straws, rope and cups. We utilized that as a fun, interactive way to feed our kitties. They loved it!
* Check your local NW Bergen or Rockland library as many also offer make and take crafts.
3) Museum Passes
Do you want to visit a local museum or perhaps one that is within a couple of hours from our local area? A museum which can be part of a day or overnight trip? Every local library I have visited offers museum passes for trip locations such as Stepping Stones Museum in Ct, Bethel Woods/Woodstock Museum, to a ton of museums in Bergen, Rockland and Orange counties! Many in NYC are also on the list, good for a wide range of ages from child to adult!
** Unusual things available for loan from some libraries you can keep an eye out for:
- Seeds and plants
- Museum passes
- Fishing poles and tackle boxes!
- Mobile hotspots
- Maker kits (like knitting, origami, etc)
- Book club in a bag kits
- Audiobooks
- Board Games/Puzzles
- STEM Activities
- Tablets/Play a ways
- Tools
- Rug Cleaner!
- Cooking supplies!
There are so many options at your local NW Bergen County library. From books to DVDs to Thursday movies at the Suffern and Mahwah libraries, to wellness and CPR seminars at the Ridgewood Library.
