About Polkadot Bakery
Polkadot Cupcake Shop is a custom bake shop specializing in unique desserts which impress both the eye and the palate. We believe you deserve the most delicious, high-quality desserts. Therefore, everything is made to order and baked from scratch with the finest ingredients, in our own commercial kitchen. You can expect fresh and delicious treats from us, be it at your backyard BBQ, wedding, a large-scale food truck event or anything in between!
Owner and lead chef/cake designer Arlene has had a love of hobby dessert baking for years (and a love of hobby dessert eating for her entire life!) Arlene was employed in Human Resources Management before obtaining her M.S. in Marriage Therapy and thru those years, baking provided a sweet release after a stressful day. Arlene is self-taught and credits her business success to imagination, creativity and attention to detail. Traveling the NJ and NY areas, bringing treats to events both public and private, the truck allows a more grab-n-go aspect to the pre-order specialty cakes.
Q1: Why did you choose this business and what motivates you daily to work on your business?
Q2: What advice would you give to another mom who's looking for an opportunity right now? Or If they're not into starting a business - and just browing to shop, what can you say to them about your company products and buy from you?
The advice I would give to another mom looking for an opportunity would be to take the risk. It's such a risk but do your research, start slow and do something you're passionate about because it really does make all the difference. It doesn't mean you aren't going to work- I work 100x harder with Polkadot than I ever have for someone else in any position I have ever held, but I'm doing something I enjoy so it's not lost.

Q1: Why did you choose this business and what motivates you daily to work on your business?
I feel like it sort of chose me. Baking was just a hobby of mine - I'm self taught. I would bake for friend's birthdays, family parties, random cupcakes after class at night to decompress. I never thought it would turn into an actual business but I'm really happy it did. The main motivation for me with my business is my daughter. I value the time I get to spend with her every day, even if it means being up late to prep an order or catch up on emails after she's gone to sleep. I know that working for someone else would not allow me that freedom.
